When we look at pictures of our yard before you began the work, it is so hard to believe the transformation that has taken place and how the design your team developed for us has come to life. Our relationship began last fall with the bidding and installation of a retaining wall. Alan Macbeth scheduled an appointment and showed up ... which is, in and of it's self, rare! He was prompt with plans, helpful, had good ideas, and most of all was very patient. We are very happy with the results. This spring Alan again came to our rescue with some excellent landscaping ideas. The project was completed as scheduled and is wonderful.

Thanks for the information. The landscaping is exactly what I wanted. Not only did you manage to mask the utility boxes and solve the drainage problem, but there is a new symmetry to the yard. What was once a flat solid green wasteland now has numerous levels due to differing plant heights and surfaces, brick and stone which complement each other, and plants to add color and life. Dear Alan,
First, as we have told you personally, we are delighted with the outcome. The backyard area we asked you to consider was originally nothing more than an extension of the wooded area behind it, but without any woodland charm. It was difficult topography, steeply sloped, in which overgrown brush, ailing trees, and assorted weeds made their home. Against this backdrop, we knew we wanted the following elements:
- access to the hill area from the existing patio - additional fencing
- retaining wall - deer resistant plants
- level area for the vegetable garden - decorative water feature
- walkway off the patio to the side of the house - better drainage
- additional seating area
Beyond this basic direction, we had no idea about design, style, feel or materials. At our first meeting, we immediately felt comfortable with you and confident that you knew your business. You inquired about our likes and dislikes, and we discussed various options for materials, such as the different types of "hardscape", as well as specific plants and our vision for the final look. You recommended that we allow you to design the full project, and discussed with you the option of completing it in various stages over a few years. We agreed and essentially gave you a free hand in the design.
When you returned to present the plan, we were immediately thrilled with it. You not only addressed all of our requirements, but also seemed to understand our personal style and provided a project whose look and feel reflected it. It was also important to us that you explained the different construction techniques, how it was to be done and the reasons for doing it in a certain way, given the specific characteristics of our lot. As a result, we decided to do the entire project at once. You told us many times, "your yard will look much worse before it looks better". That, of course, was no understatement.
Finally, everything was completed, and the ultimate product is nothing short of stupendous. It encompasses all of the elements of the original design, and joins the existing landscape and patio area seamlessly, which is an aspect of this project that was great to see realized. Judging from our own satisfaction with the outcome, and the "wow" reaction from people who see it, we'd say you not only achieved, but also exceeded, what we had hoped.
