Alan is a graduate of the University of British Columbia Garden Design program, under the tutelage of renowned Landscape Architect Ron Rule. Alan spent 14 years as a member of the horticulture department at the world famous Butchart Gardens in his hometown of Victoria, BC. He was promoted to the level of Senior Horticulturist, having learned and honed his skills in all aspects of horticulture, garden design, construction methodology, maintenance, and project management. In 2002, Alan and his family relocated to Northern Virginia and joined the team at Kingstowne Lawn & Landscape.
As a certified member of ICPI, an active member of the Association of Professional Landscape Designers, and creator of an award-winning garden design, Alan offers a wealth of experience and design vision. Comfortable in a wide array of garden styles, Alan works with you through all aspects of your project: from initial consultation to design, pricing, installation management and final walk-through.
Like all young Canadians, Alan dreamed of earning his living playing hockey. Alan feels very fortunate to have made that dream come true playing professionally in Europe, where he made strong friendships that still last today. His start at Butchart Gardens not only inspired his passion for garden design, but served as the place where he met his wife, Tara—the director of Mount Vernon Preschool. When away from work, Alan coaches his son and other local youth at the NOVA ice hockey club, as well as watching his son play lacrosse and rugby.
Alan looks forward to meeting you and talking about your project. Whether large or small, simple or complex, Alan looks forward to creating a landscape that works for you!
